A New House Built Just for You

Many people believe that building their own custom home is beyond their reach. Norse Custom Homes has broken the process down into some manageable steps. Take some time to browse through the steps to find out how the process can work for you.

Dream A Little

The first step is to dream a little. Don't be too realistic, or practical at this point of the process. There are quite a few useful online resources to get you started.

Now would be a good time to jot down some ideas and perhaps draw some sketches of what you would like your new home to look like and what features it should include. Choose a home style and the number of rooms. How would you like to use your space?

After you have a rough idea of what you want your new home to be, take a look at some quality home plans. We recommend Alan Mascord Design Associates Inc. because of their attention to detail and state-of-the-art design practices. The next step is to explore Pierce County to determine where you would like to build your new home.

Save Some Money

Once you've decided on Gig Harbor and area as your future home, you can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars by spending a few hours researching your financial, insurance, and construction/design options. Here is a short checklist.

Talk with a financial planner about the advantages of paying for your new home in cash or obtaining a mortgage and diversifying your funds in other investments. Call banks, mortgage companies, savings and loan companies, and other lenders to pre-qualify for a loan.

Check current interest rates, closing costs, and other possible fees among these different institutions. These costs can vary widely. "Pre-qualify" for a new home loan, and you will know exactly how much mortgage money is available to you.

Now carefully review those house pictures and room sketches you've clipped. Select those that are at the top of you and your family's "want list." These are the raw materials of your dream when you sit down with an architect and contractor.

As soon as you have preliminary blueprints, decide on traffic flow and conveniences throughout your new house, like the number and placement of bathrooms, closets, garage size, etc. Now is an excellent time to choose interior and exterior colors, flooring, kitchen and bathroom fixtures and appliances, placement of phone, electric, and cable outlets. Decide now and save yourself from regretted mistakes because of hasty decisions. You want your dream home to be something extraordinary. So do we.

Select a Contractor

Start looking for land to build your custom home on and select a contractor. The contractor you choose is the key player in constructing your custom home. He hires, coordinates, and supervises all subcontractors from plumbers and electricians to framers and roofers, and orders all materials. That's why finding and selecting the right contractor is one of the most crucial decisions you will make for your future home.

Does the contractor you are considering have many years of construction experience in the area where you want to build with some completed homes for you to see? Does the contractor have references from previous clients that you can check? The contractor should communicate well with you and use only the best subcontractors and procure quality materials.

At Norse Custom Homes, we firmly believe communication is the key to a successful building project. Constructing a new home is an exciting and important endeavor, and we want the process to be as smooth and enjoyable as possible. That's why we provide each client with access to a secure website with all of the details of their project.

Whether you are at home, at work, on the road, or vacation, Norse Custom Homes puts information at your fingertips about your selections, upgrades, financial decisions, questions, documents, photos, and more. We would love to talk with you about your ideas for your dream home and then help bring them to life for you.
